Doukas: “Athens is a strong global brand in the field of culture”
The title of World’s Leading Cultural Destination, at the World Travel Awards 2024, was won by Athenswhich stood out among 15 destinations for its rich cultural heritage and the unique experiences it offers twelve months a year to its millions of visitors. The award ceremony was held in Madeira last Sunday (24/11) and the CEO of Development Athens SA, Ioannis Georgizas, received the award.
In his statement about this distinction, the mayor of Athens Harry Doukas, pointed out: “We are very proud of this award, which proves that Athens is a strong global brand in the field of culture. A lively and welcoming city, which shares with its visitors its rich cultural heritage combined with its modern, upgraded image. In the municipality of Athens, we continue to invest in strengthening culture through important actions and events, which bring residents and visitors into contact with the rich cultural past and present of Athens.”
The World Travel Awards have been held annually since 1993 and for 2024 the cities competing in the same category as Athens were Edinburgh, London, New York, Paris, Rome, Dubrovnik, Venice, Rio de Janeiro Janeiro, Beijing, Kyoto, Quito, Hoi An in Vietnam, Barranquilla and Santiago de Cali in Colombia.
“This global recognition of Athens comes as a result of the systematic work we do in the area of the city’s extroversion”, said Mr. Georgizas and added: “Through the Development Company of the Municipality of Athens, we continue to implement actions aimed at highlighting the competitive advantages of Athens in the international tourist markets. Our goal is to attract high-level tourism in order to strengthen the local economy.”
