The figures for the first month of the year are particularly encouraging, foreshadowing a high flying summer season. There is a 12.4% increase in passenger traffic throughout the country’s airports, 2,712,144 passengers were traded against 2,413,403 in the corresponding period of 2024.
The first positive signs were reflected in the passenger traffic for our country’s largest airport, “Eleftherios Venizelos”, since in the first month of 2025 we have a double -digit increase in passenger traffic and flight traffic. The passenger traffic of the Athens International Airport (AIA) during January 2025 amounted to 1.83 million, increased by 14.5% compared to 2024. In detail, both domestic and international passenger traffic exceeded by 5.1% and 18.7% in 2024 levels.
The number of flights to Athens International Airport during January 2025 amounted to 16,546, recording an increase of 10.1% compared to 2024. The domestic flights declined a slight decline of 2.5%, while international Flights rose 19.1% compared to January 2024.
It is recalled that in 2024 it was a year of record for the passenger traffic of Athens Airport, as a highly high tourist flow was recorded. As for the development of passenger traffic in 2024, Athens ranks first at European level compared to 2019, showing a strong growth course as the European airport sector is still in recovery. In 2024, international non -resident arrivals reached 7.9 million, from 7.1 million in 2023 and 6.4 million in 2019, with 12% and 24% increases, respectively.
In particular, the largest number of visitors came from traditional markets (USA, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy), and as a general conclusion, the majority of European markets saw a double -digit increase in visitors. At the same time, overseas destinations/ markets, such as Australia and China, have recovered rapidly. At the same time, with the development of these important markets, market players, they are of particular interest in the India market.
Passenger traffic rose 12.6% to the 24 CAA Management Airports (Heraklion, Kalamata, Alexandroupolis, Lemnos, Astypalaia, Ioannina, Chios, Kozani, Kastoria, Karpathos, Kythira, Milos, Skyros, Nea Anchia , Naxos, Kalymnos, Ikaria, Kastelorizo, Kassos, Leros, Sitia) in January 2025, compared to January 2024.
The past year ended with an 8% rise to passenger traffic at the 24 CAA Management Airports compared to the corresponding period of 2023. At 11,975,632 passengers, compared to 11,092,141 passengers corresponding period of 2023.
Increase 3.6% in Fraport Greece’s 14 regional airports
For the first month of 2025, passenger traffic at the country’s 14 regional airports, managed by Fraport (Thessaloniki, Corfu, Kefalonia, Aktio, Zakynthos, Kavala, Chania, Rhodes, Samos, Skiathos, Mytilene, Mykonos, Mykonos, Santorini) reached 663,752 and increased by 3.6% compared to the corresponding interval of Last year.
The total domestic passenger traffic was 400,311 passengers, increasing 1.1% compared to 2024, while total overseas passenger traffic stood at 263,441 passengers, which means an increase of 7.7% compared to 2024.
The lion’s share, as expected, belongs to Thessaloniki’s “Macedonia” Airport, where the total move for January 2025 reached 439,697 travelers, increasing by 8.2%. Macedonia Airport, it is recalled, maintained the primacy among the 14 regional airports managed by Fraport, reaching 7,381 million passengers that were trafficked throughout last year.
At the top of the top five passengers, which were traded via Macedonia Airport, are the Greeks (179,424 passengers) and even with a prominent difference, followed by travelers from Germany, Cyprus, Italy and the Netherlands.
In second place after Macedonia Airport comes Chania with 63,765 passengers (9.1%increase), of which 60,640 come from domestic flights. Rhodes ranked third with more than 56,000 passengers (and reduced traffic over January 4.7%), followed by Mytilene with 24,924 passengers and a 4.7%increase. Kos Airport recorded the highest rise on a percentage basis (+12.3%) and follows Zakynthos Airport (+10.7%). On the contrary, Kavala Airport experienced the largest fall of 64.6%, followed by Santorini Airport with -33.3%and Corfu with -25%.
It should be noted that during 2024 the 14 airports set a new historic record with 36.026 million passengers on both the domestic and foreign network. An increase of 6.4% compared to 2023 or about 2.1 million more passengers.
