“I came back for non-football reasons. Since then I have never thought of leaving Greece again”
The thoughts of a permanent stay abroad, which he did 20 years ago, when he lived in Spain with her Miss Vandi, confided Demis Nikolaidis. The footballer and former president of AEK uploaded a video to his Instagram account, making a touching confession about his decision at the time.
“I thought about leaving Greece and living abroad. It crossed my mind but, many years ago. When I left Greece to play in Spain, in Atlético Madrid, I thought about staying there. This thought lasted 2-3 months. Then, for non-football reasons, I wanted to return”, he describes Demis Nikolaidis.
“It’s not that I missed Greece and that’s why I came back. I came back because I wanted to help my team. I could stay in Spain because the Spanish were more… They were kind of like the Greeks but much kinder. And it still is. I have been impressed by many examples of Spaniards. They are a little slower than us, but they are kinder and more methodical,” adds the former footballer.
“We always think of ourselves as smarter. But at the same time we are other things that are being fixed. Each generation is better than the last or so I want to believe, or so I want to see them. The new kids are nicer than we are. More sociable people than my generation was. Since then, in 2003 and after, I never thought about leaving Greece to live abroad”, concludes Demis Nikolaidis in his confession.
