From this year, the possibility to declare digital immobility for vehicles is provided, which must also be completed by December 31, 2024
The deadline for the payment of traffic fees expires the day after tomorrow, Tuesday, December 31, and as the Ministry of National Economy and Finance has announced in all tones, this year no extension will be given, unlike what happened in previous years.
It is worth noting that from this year the fee payment procedure has been modified, while strict deadlines are set, with the aim of avoiding fines and other charges. In addition, from this year it is possible to declare digital immobility for vehicles, a procedure that exempts owners from the obligation to pay road tax for the year 2025. This declaration must be completed by December 31, 2024, to be valid.
New system of fines
In case of late payment, the Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE) has introduced a new system of fines, which escalates according to the period of delay:
- 25% on the fee if payment is made within January 2025.
- 50% on the fee if payment is made in February 2025.
- 100% on the fee if payment is made from 1 March 2025 onwards.
The minimum fine is set at 30 euros, regardless of the amount of the fee. AADE has adopted this new practice in order to strengthen citizens’ compliance with their tax obligations.
Three key points for taxpayers
Before paying road tax, taxpayers should consider the following three points to avoid errors and omissions:
1. Transfer of vehicle: If a vehicle is transferred within 2024, the 2025 road tax is borne solely by the new owner from 1 January. It is critical that the transfer process is completed on time so that there are no problems.
2. Co-ownership of a vehicle: If the vehicle belongs to more than one owner, the road tax is issued as a whole for each VAT number. All co-owners are jointly responsible for repayment, which requires coordination between them to avoid tensions.
3. Immobility of vehicle: The owners of I.X. have the option to immobilize their vehicles, thereby avoiding paying road tax for 2025, as well as the imposition of presumptions of living or luxury living taxes. The declaration of immobility must be submitted via the AADE myCar platform by December 31, 2024.
Simplified digital immobility process
The immovable property declaration process has been greatly simplified, allowing taxpayers to complete it electronically, without the need to present physical documents such as license plates and license plates. Through the “My Requests” platform on the myAADE portal, taxpayers can submit their immovable property request quickly and easily.
The possibility of digital declaration also covers cases such as theft, misappropriation, natural disaster or death of the owner. In these cases, the process is completed without a physical presence at the tax office, further facilitating citizens.
Fines for immobility violations
If a vehicle is driven while it is declared immobile, its owner is required to pay a fine of 10,000 euros. In case of recurrence, the fine increases to 30,000 euros, while the driver’s license is revoked for a period of three years.
It is worth noting that, with the new procedure, the vehicle’s registration details (licence and number plates) remain in the possession of the owner, thus reducing paperwork and facilitating the whole process.
