Google Maps now mentions the Gulf of Southeast USA, in the sea between Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Mexico and Cuba, but only for its users in the US.
Users in Mexico continue to see the name “Gulf of Mexico”, as the Mexican government wishes.
In addition, users in other countries see two names: “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”, a tactic followed by Google Maps for displaced areas.

And the White House’s official account on X posted the message: “AMERICA BODY IN @GOOGLEMAPS”.
Google had explained at the end of January that changes in the names of locations are based on official government sources, in this case the USA (GNIS) Information System (GNIS)
In the opponent of Google Maps, on Apple maps, the name remains “Gulf of Mexico”.
Trump had described this bay as a “integral part of America” a few hours after returning to the White House on January 20th. He believes that it is vital to the production of oil and the US fishing and considers it “the destination that Americans prefer for tourism and entertainment”.
This Republican move caused the concern of Mexico and other countries, referred to the EIA.
Mexican President Claudia Seinbaum even suggested that the US be renamed “Mexican America”, a reference to a 17th century map in which much of the northern part of America appeared under that name.
Trump has also stated that he wants to again name Mount MacKkinley the highest mountain peak of North America located in Alaska at 6,190 meters. In 2015, then US President Barack Obama had renamed the top of Denali, at the request of the indigenous people.
