It is widely used by cybercriminals involved in financial crime
US authorities today announced an international operation against the notorious ‘Qakbot’ malware platform, widely used by cybercriminals involved in financial crime.
“The Qakbot malware has infected more than 700,000 computers, facilitated the development of ransomware, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to businesses, healthcare providers, and government agencies around the world,” the US Department of Justice said in a statement. According to the ministry, authorities from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Britain were also involved in the operation.
First identified over a decade ago, ‘Qakbot’ is usually spread via emails sent to unsuspecting victims. Security researchers believe the hacking network originated in Russia and has attacked organizations around the world from Germany to Argentina.
