Trump’s suggestion
The US president Donald Trump told reporters Monday that the Microsoft discusses the acquisition of Tiktokin the context of the government’s plan to avoid a ban on the platform in the US.
“I would say yes” Trump replied when a journalist asked him if Microsoft is discussing the acquisition of social media.
‘Tiktok is of great interest, there is a lot of interest in Tiktok. I like bidding wars because they allow you to achieve the best possible deal, ”the Republican added.
Trump refused to name other companies seeking to acquire Tiktok, but assured that they were “high -level companies”.
Access to Tiktok, which is used by about 170 million Americans, was interrupted in the US for a few hours in mid -January, shortly before the law adopted in the country, which requires its parent company, Chinese byTedance, to sell the platform as otherwise this will be banned in the US since January 19th.
After being sworn in US president on January 20, Trump signed an executive decree postponing 75 days to implement the legislation.
Last week the US president had pointed out that he was in discussions with many people about Tiktok’s acquisition and He added that it is likely that there will be a decision on the future of the popular platform within a month.
After all, Trump has proposed the ByTedance to give the US 50% of Tiktok’s capital in return for the non -implementation of the legislation. Washington could then give this percentage to US private interests.
According to US public NPR radio, the Trump government is trying to form a group of investors around Oracle (the company that offers cloud services in Tiktok) to take over the algorithm and platform data, while byTedance will remain a minority shareholder .
In addition, Trump has previously stated that he is open to the possibility of buying Tiktok by billionaire Elon Musk if he wishes, although the richest man in the world has not publicly commented on.
The current alleged discussions with Microsoft are the second time the company has been discussing the acquisition of Tiktok.
During his first term in the presidency, Trump had sought to ban the US platform citing concerns about national security. In 2020, Microsoft was presented as the basic company interested in its purchase, but soon the talks collapsed.
