The season closed at the end of November with the arrival of the ‘Island Princess’
A record year for the Mykonos marked by the departure, a few days ago, of the last cruise ship of this year’s tourist season with new high levels of traffic, targeted infrastructure improvements and actions that enhanced the visitor experience.
As noted in a related announcement, in 2023 it recorded 749 cruise ship arrivals, with more than 1.19 million passengers, while in 2024 it exceeded expectations with 768 arrivals and more than 1.29 million passengers.
According to a statement by the president of the Port Fund, Ath. Kousathana – Mega, “these impressive results prove the continuous development of Mykonos as a top destination and reflect the effective strategy of the Municipality and the Port Fund to manage arrivals and improve the services provided”.
Mr. Megas emphasized that “a decisive role in reducing the pressure on the infrastructure was played by the better distribution of ships on all days of the week, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable experience for visitors. At the same time, the strengthened infrastructure and the increased promotion of the local cultural and culinary identity had a positive effect on the island’s economy and strengthened the authentic image of Mykonos”.
Improving the passenger experience is an ongoing priority for the Mykonos Port Fund and, as its president states, “we continue to support the need for a balanced increase in passenger fees, along with planning new interventions that will further improve the passenger experience us. The Port Fund of Mykonos invests in targeted infrastructure projects and partnerships, which not only decongest the port, but upgrade the overall functionality and aesthetics of the area.”
One of the most important projects being implemented is the creation of four new berths for boats in the area below the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. The project is expected to improve connectivity between the new and old ports, facilitating the movement of visitors and ensuring faster and more efficient service. At the same time, the implementation of an innovative water recycling system at the port facilities will contribute to the drastic reduction of water consumption, strengthening Mykonos’ commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable management of its resources.
“These interventions are not only technical improvements, but are strategic choices that combine the upgrade of the passenger experience with the protection of the natural environment, ensuring the sustainability of the destination over time,” explains Mr. Great and adds:
“Mykonos is more than just a Greek destination. It is a global destination. Its visitors come not only for the natural beauties and the cosmopolitan atmosphere, but also to experience its authentic identity. In 2024, special emphasis was placed on strengthening the island’s local trade, gastronomy and cultural heritage, offering visitors a complete experience. The positive image received by guests proves the effectiveness of our strategy, while encouraging us to continue investing in improving their experience.”
Regarding the future prospects of the cruise, the chairman of the Port Fund said that “2024 marked the successful effort to extend the cruise season, which from 2025 will cover the period from February to December. This strategy ensures a greater dispersion of arrivals and reduces pressure during the high season, contributing to the viability of the destination. The cooperation of the Port Fund with the Municipality of Mykonos, the Customs, the Port Authority, the Passport Control Service of the Hellenic Police, the limousines, the Shipping Service, sailors and tourist agents was once again the cornerstone of our success this year. We would also like to thank the members of the Board and the tireless team of the Port Fund, the cruise consultant, the security company and the YALE and AVALE, as well as the passenger transport companies, who with their contribution ensured the smooth and safe operation of the port and the provision of high-level services”.
Finally, Mr. Megas underlined: “Mykonos continues to be a beacon of growth for cruises in Greece and the world. Our strategy focuses on targeted investments, innovations and partnerships that strengthen the island’s position as a global destination. The season closed at the end of November with the arrival of the Island Princess, which we had the pleasure of welcoming and meeting the ship’s captain. This arrival marked the perfect end to another successful year for cruising in Mykonos. With the commitment of all stakeholders, the island will continue to inspire and attract visitors from all over the world, remaining a living beacon of Greek tourism and a platform for sustainable development. Mykonos will continue to write its own history on the global tourist map.”
