“The island stands out for its rich history, impressive vegetation, waterfalls but also the fact that it still resists mass tourism”
Extensive tribute to Samo published Spain’s National Geographic, explaining at the outset that “beaches, nature, ancient monuments and legends are ingredients that combine in different proportions in the Greek islands, making them unique. A representative example is Samos, one of the islands of the North Aegean, which stands out for its rich history, impressive vegetation, waterfalls but also the fact that it still resists mass tourism”.
A special mention is made of Vathi with its cobbled streets, neoclassical houses and the ancient city, as well as Pythagorean which fascinates with its beauty and centuries of history. Among the necessary recommended stops for the traveler are the Archaeological museum with the impressively large Kouros, the Eupalineo trench which is a marvel in the history of engineering and the Monastery of Megali Panagia with its beautiful frescoes.
The article highly recommends Mount Kerkis, the second highest mountain in the Aegean, for exploring and hiking which is rich in springs, small churches and caves such as the Pythagoras Cave. In addition, according to the international travel media, Karlovasi in the west “steals the show” with its picturesque corners, the harbor and the amazing sunset. At the same time, it is noted that with the aim of strengthening the extroversion of the destination, the Municipalities of Eastern and Western Samos are creating the conditions for promotion in foreign markets of interest such as Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Turkey, while efforts are also being made to approach Spanish-speaking markets.
“Our priority is the creation of a multifaceted narrative that identifies the destination with the good life. Green forests, refreshing activities, authentic hospitality, historical monuments, monasteries, churches, gastronomy, picturesque settlements and quality services are integral components of the message we broadcast through international and domestic media. Samos is an “oasis” of authenticity that has not been altered by hyper-tourism and has the quality of an international destination,” said the mayor of Eastern Samos, Paraskevas Papageorgiou.
“Through contacts at the international tourism exhibition in London with tour operators, airline representatives and journalists, we found interest in the destination from markets such as M. Britain, Spain and Switzerland. Special forms of tourism in our region, such as hiking and mountaineering, have their own audience and are beginning to show remarkable dynamics. Our goal is to promote Samos as a destination for anyone to discover outside of the summer season”, emphasized the Deputy Mayor of Tourism of the Municipality of Western Samos, Vangelis Marnezos.
