Why are the inhabitants disturbed by their overcrowding
The deer in Lemnos are a pole of attraction for visitors to the island. However, residents have a different view.
Anna Touounoglou, president of the Animal Association “Stray Souls” and president of the Pan -Hellenic Animal Federation of Greece, explains that the friendly deer arrived on the island.
Plathia was transferred to Rhodes in the late 1960s, at the initiative of the then Mayor Lemnos. The first couple was easily acclimated, and soon multiplied. “In 2000 they were estimated at 100 animals, and today there are 40 people around the castle area.”
The deer who do not understand human terms need food and collect it wherever they find it, in fields with crops, gardens with vegetables and horticulture. Always anything that disturbs the programming of every household, every cultivator immediately raises protests, referred to ERT.
If we want as a local community to have them, a private entity, which will deal with the issue, should be created, says Mrs Toununoglou.
Another complex issue that needs practical solutions. Either they will exterminate the deer or live away from gardens and fields. The only appropriate solution is the fence of either deer in an area specifically set for this purpose, where local government will take care of their diet, and possibly for birth control, with what this implies or will be expressed by the estates.
