This year, donors have already reached 100
On Monday, November 25, 2024, with organ donation carried out by a 49-year-old deceased donor, of the “Evangelismos” Foundation, following the consent of his family, a pan-Hellenic “record” was set for the first time in the number of deceased organ donors. The donor of Evangelism, who gave life to 6 of our fellow human beings, was the 99th organ donor for 2024, surpassing the 98 organ donors of 2008. Today, a corresponding donation was completed by the 100th organ donor for 2024, from GNA “Korgialenio Benakio EES “, of a 41-year-old man who also gave life to 6 our fellow human beings.
The president of the National Organization Transplants (EOM), Professor George Papatheodoridis, says characteristically: “Today is a “milestone” day for the transplantation system of our country. One hundred great families, said YES to the donation of the organs of their loved ones, allowing them, with their death, to generously give life, surpassing any precedent for Greek standards. These 100 organ donors came from 32 Intensive Care Units of our country, where without the tireless support of their staff, these donations would not have been achieved and we thank them warmly for that. In any case, this optimistic news presupposes the continuous, 24-hour, intensive and uninterrupted operation of the entire Transplantation System (EOM, Transplantation Units, supporting Departments and Laboratories) of our country, conditions that significantly increase the demands on infrastructure and human resources” .
2024 is the 4th year in a row where the upward trend in organ donation and transplants continues unabated and is now the year in which the number of organ donors and transplants surpasses any previous one, reported APE BPE. The 100 deceased organ donors have already given life to 225 transplant patients, while 106 living donors have given a transplant to the same number of recipients from their family or friends, surpassing any previous record.
