“Eleftherios Venizelos” and the 14 airports of Fraport Greece broke the barrier of 40 million passengers in 8 months
A record year so far has been 2023 for its performance passenger traffic at airports despite devastating fires and deadly floods in the last two months.
Based on the data so far as well as the forecasts, both of the president of Athens International Airport Mr. Richardos Lampiris and of its managing director Fraport Greece Mr. Alexander Zinell, 2023 is expected to be the best year for passenger traffic, going full speed for a record year.
For the eight months of 2023 in all the airports of our country (Athens “Eleftherios Venizelos” Airport, 24 airports managed by CAA, 14 regional airports managed by Fraport Greece), the passenger traffic compared to the corresponding period of 2022 and 2019 increased, exceeding 50 million traveling passengers while high levels are also recorded in the month of September.
In particular, for the eight months of the year 2023 in Greece (January/August 2023), the total number of passengers traveling at airports (arrivals and departures of foreign and domestic passengers) reached 50,152,145, compared to 43,788,675 in the corresponding period of 2022 and 44,895,202 passengers in 2019. From the above statistics, there is an increase in passenger traffic of +14.5% compared to 2022 and an increase of +11.7% compared to 2019.

“Champions” in the increase are the Athens airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” and the 14 airports managed by Fraport.
Based on aggregate data from the 15 main airports, passenger traffic in the first eight months of the year broke the 40 million passenger barrier. Specifically, Athens International Airport received 18,668,442 visitors from January to August, while 24,106,822 visitors “landed” at the 14 regional airports, i.e. a total of 42,775,264 domestic and international visitors. International visitors alone reached 31,999,447 in the eight months – 12,796,657 at AIA and 19,202,790 at the regional airports managed by Fraport, while in the hottest quarter of the year (June – July – August) 26.8 million passengers (9.5 million at AIA – and 17.3 million at regional airports).
A record year in 2023 for Athens International Airport
“If the good performance continues at the rate it has been, this year we will have a record year for Athens airport, surpassing the historical performance of 2019,” said the president of the AIA, speaking at the 6th Infrastructure and Transport Conference – ITC 2023 Rihardos Lampiris, even quoting a series of facts that confirm the positive course. For 2019, AIA recorded 25.58 million passengers, when according to data up to August this year, it reached 18.7 million passengers, compared to 17.3 million for the same period of 2019.
As revealed by Mr. Lampiris and transmitted by the Athens News Agency, indicative of the increase was “from the airport terminal there are days when 102,000 passengers are transported daily, an impressive figure for the data up to now”.
America, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Israel, Cyprus, Canada, Spain, Austria and Germany are the “cores” in the increase in passenger traffic at Athens International Airport. Indicatively, the market of Austria, in the first 8 months of the year, compared to the corresponding period of 2019, showed an increase of approximately 45% compared to 2019, of Spain by 25%, of France by 15%, of America by 63% , Israel by 68% and Canada by 32%.
Fraport Greece – Record year for all 14 airports
A record year is estimated to be 2023 for Fraport Greece, which manages 14 Greek regional airports, according to Alexander Zinell, the company’s CEO. “Our estimate, for the whole of 2023, is 33 million passengers against 31.19 million last year,” he said speaking at the 6th Infrastructure and Transport Conference – ITC 2023.
At the level of the eight months of January – August, passenger traffic exceeded 24 million compared to 22 million in 2022, with an increase of 8.5%. The increase in domestic traffic contributed to this increase with 4.9 million passengers compared to 4.1 million passengers last year, i.e. an increase of 18.4%. passengers (18.4%), as well as from abroad with 19.2 million passengers compared to 18.1 last year, an increase of 6.2%. All destinations saw an increase compared to last year, in fact Thessaloniki recorded the largest percentage increase of 20.8%. The airports of Kavala (up 18.9%), Mytilini (up 15.1%), Skiathos and Chania (up 11.4% and 11.2% respectively) also recorded an increase.
The eight months at the 14 regional airports also closed with a 10.9% increase compared to 2019, with Mytilini (0.6%), Kavala (5.6%) and Samos (0.6%) fall. On the contrary, the best percentage performances were recorded by Aktio (29.2%), Skiathos (25.7%), Chania (21%) and Corfu (22.3%).
