SpaceX’s thousands of low-orbit Starlink satellites use laser links to transmit data to each other at the speed of light
SpaceX will begin selling laser satellite links, used for high-speed space communications, to other satellite companies, company President Gwynne Shotwell said today during a press conference.
SpaceX’s thousands of low-orbit Starlink satellites use laser links to transmit data between them at the speed of light, allowing the network to provide greater Internet coverage around the world with fewer ground stations. Speaking on a panel at the Satellite Show conference in Washington, Shotwell said the company as a supplier would sell this technology to other companies.
“We’re going to develop that … with our new Polaris Dawn mission expected this summer with a Dragon capsule,” Shotwell said, referring to an upcoming flight of private astronauts in the company’s Dragon space capsule.
