Turkey has filed its coast tourism trademark with the EU Intellectual Property Office
The European trademark “Turkaegean” is canceled after coordinated actions of the Ministry of Development and the Industrial Property Organization (OBI), by decision of the Intellectual Property Office of the EU. (C58927, 10/01/25).
This is stated in a statement, with the Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos, stating: “Greece under the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is strong on the international stage and defends its national interests with determination and efficiency in the commercial field as well. We claim our right with all our strength and with every legal means. This is how we arrived at the vindication of the infringement of the European Trademark “Turkaegean”.
In the announcement, it is recalled that in 2021, the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Organization (TGA) filed for registration with the Intellectual Property Office of the EU. the trademark “Turkaegean”. In February 2023, during the ministry of Adonis Georgiadis, a request for cancellation was filed by the Hellenic Republic, with the OBI handling the case for the infringement of the Turkish organization’s trademark. The result of these actions, as underlined, is today’s decision, which is a vindication of the Greek positions.
For his part, the president of OBI, Dimitris Chronis, said: “The decision to cancel ‘Turkaegean’ fully satisfies the Greek positions and fully justifies the decision to resort to insulting the brand”. The general manager of the OBI, Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, commented: “In the “Turkaegean” case, the OBI, together with the legal representatives who represented the country, worked systematically and methodically to achieve today’s positive result in a difficult legal battle”.
