PPA cruise passengers increase by 68.6% in 2023 compared to 2022
Event welcoming the new cruise ship Sun Princess took place in the port of Piraeus. During the event, plaques were exchanged between the deputy managing director of PPA S.A. Panagiotis Tsonis and the captain of the Sun Princess Captain Craig Street for welcoming the cruise ship to Piraeus on its maiden voyage.
Sun Princess this season has 10 scheduled arrivals of which 7 will be based in the port of Piraeus. His first cruise started on 28/02/2024, departing from Civitavecchia (Rome), for Naples, Santorini, Kusadasi, Piraeus, Messina, Mallorca, Barcelona.
The newly built cruise ship that travels using LNG is one of the largest cruise ships ever built in Italy. With a length of 345m, it can accommodate 4,300 passengers and 1,150 crew on its 21 decks, while it has 2,150 cabins.
Increase in cruise passengers
At port of Piraeus in 2023 there was a 68.6% increase in total cruise passengers compared to 2022 and a total of approximately 1.5 million passengers and 760 cruise ships were served.
Of the 760 cruise ships served in Piraeus in 2023, 75% did homeporting, i.e. they started the cruise from the port of Piraeus. Homeporting passengers were 800,000, up 110% from 2022.
For 2024, according to the planning, more than 1,000 cruise ships are expected, of which 79% will be homeporting, it was noted in APE BEE.
The deputy managing director of PPA S.A. Panagiotis Tsonis expressed his great satisfaction for the remarkable course of the port of Piraeus and the high performance in the cruise sector.
