The 44-year-old defendant confessed to her act and was acquitted after her employer withdrew the lawsuit
It seems that a 58-year-old woman in Thessaloniki had a police demon, who recently found that money was unjustifiably missing from her house, so she decided to take action.
Her suspicions turned to the 44-year-old housekeeper, but she was looking for a way to prove it beyond all doubt. Then she came up with her plan. She photocopied banknotes with a total value of 350 euros with the identifying serial number from each one visible and then placed the specific amount of money in her bag.
When last Monday morning the housekeeper appeared at home – as planned – to work, the 58-year-old woman, after welcoming her, insisted that she must leave. In her absence the 44-year-old… reached into the bag and removed the money. Returning home and after finding that the 350 euros were missing, the 58-year-old addressed the Police, reporting the theft, while also presenting her receipts.
The piggy bank with the money and her acquittal
A search followed at the house of the domestic helper, where, in addition to the above banknotes that were compatible with those shown by the complainant’s typographic data base, the sum of 1,900 euros was found in a piggy bank. As the 44-year-old confessed, it was money that she had partially stolen from her employer in the past.
She herself offered to compensate the 58-year-old, which she did. Under these circumstances, the Autonomous Single-member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki – where she was referred to stand trial – acquitted her, with the complainant previously stating that she did not wish to be prosecuted. She was also acquitted on suspicion of a knife found in her home during the police search.
