Two foreigners were arrested who had “imprisoned” their victims in order to force them into forced labor in the fields
A shocking case of trafficking in people came to light on Friday, April 18, in New Manolada, with police releasing eight foreign men who were illegally held under inhumane conditions.
The operation was carried out yesterday morning by police officers from the Bupaan Police Department, following a signal received through the European Emergency Number 112. Authorities arrived at a home in the area, where they identified eight men, victims of trafficking, trapped in a small room, without access to their passports.
An alien man was arrested for their illegal retention, while another person, also an alien, was identified, who was allegedly undertaken by the victims from Laconia to Ilia. He is accused of trafficking in human beings, as reports so far, removed the victims’ travel documents in order to force them – in collaboration with unknown associates – in forced labor as land workers.
The detainees were led to the Ilia Public Prosecutor in Amaliada, while investigations are continuing both to identify the associates and to clarify the full range of the case.
