By decision of the Minister of Education, the Theology teacher at a High School in Lavrio was suspended and referred to the Disciplinary
A pamphlet with homophobic and extreme references that was distributed this morning, October 29, by a Religious Studies teacher to High School students in Lavrio, has caused an uproar.
Citing the writings of Saints and priests, he gave the students a text to read, which he even included in the curriculum, in an unimaginable hate sermon. “Homosexuals are worse than murderers, because it is better to die than to live and be offended like that. (…) There is nothing more hideous, more terrible, more stupid, more dishonorable than homosexuality,” the pamphlet states.
Students, shocked by this hate speech, immediately informed their parents. “We are children from 12 to 15 years old, we should learn the right things and not be shown such models,” a student told Mega. “I find it unacceptable. Everyone has their own preferences, they are born the way they are born, they follow what they follow, they are members of society,” said a parent.
According to what Professor Constantinos Papadimitriou stated on Mega’s camera, what he says from time to time to children is not his personal opinion. “These things I know, these things I read, these things I studied, these things I found on the internet and anyone who wants can get a pamphlet, see the opinion of Saint John Chrysostom and the other fathers of the church”.
As he says, without the slightest sign of repentance, he distributed the pamphlet in response to students’ questions about whether the church accepts homosexuals. “We received two or three questions from the children, what about this matter, it was made clear that this matter is for everyone a matter of justice. The church does not judge.”
The parents reported the teacher and by decision of the Minister of Education, he was suspended and referred to the Disciplinary Committee. “Schools are places of education, friendship, respect and solidarity. The educational community must respect and promote these principles”, announced the Ministry of Education.
According to the school’s Association of Parents and Guardians, there were reports of inappropriate behavior by the particular teacher in the past as well.
