Relates to a flight from New York via Frankfurt to Budapest in May 2022
The US Department of Transportation announced today the imposition of a $4 million fine on Lufthansa for discrimination against Jewish passengers on a flight from New York via Frankfurt to Budapest in May 2022.
The ministry said 128 Jewish passengers – almost all of whom were wearing clothing worn by Orthodox Jewish men – were barred from boarding a connecting flight to Germany, citing alleged inappropriate behavior by some passengers.
Despite the fact that many of them Jews passengers who did not know each other or travel together, told department investigators that Lufthansa treated them all as if they were a single group and denied them boarding because of alleged misconduct by some, according to the US Department of Transportation.
It also noted that it will require Lufthansa to pay $2 million as well as $2 million in compensation to passengers, APE BPE stressed.
The German airline has denied that any of its employees were involved in discrimination against passengers, but agreed to the settlement to avoid lawsuits that the US department had threatened to bring against it.
